BAES Retirement Association Kingston
Walk 33 Loxwood - London's Lost Route to the Sea on 20 April 2004

For the 33rd Walk John Arthur and Stan Stapleton, chose a circuit just over the Surrey-West Sussex border not very far from Dunsfold.

14 members, including some from the Hawker Association, enjoyed a pleasant country stroll part of which was along the towpath of the derelict, but partly restored, Wey and Arun Junction Canal which has been described as London's lost route to the sea.

The canal was completed in 1816 to connect the the River Wey with the River Arun and make a navigable waterway from London to the South Coast. This was closed in 1871 with the spread of the railways. The Wey and Arun Canal Trust is a group of enthusiasts and volunteers aiming to restore the canal.

Thanks are due to the committee of the Hawker Association and in particular to Richard Cannon for enabling the use of this website.
