Miniature Gas Turbines - James Hill

On 13th July 2011, James Hill, Chairman of the Gas Turbine Builders Association, spoke to the Hawker Association about the design, manufacture and operation of miniature gas turbine engines for model aircraft, boats, cars and railway locomotives.

He also brought along examples of engines and components as well as his transportable, instrumented test stand on which he gave a demonstration engine run. Engine operating parameters were displayed on a computer screen.

The audience was convinced by James that the GTBA is involved in real engineering on a small scale which not only requires the solution to all the problems involved in full scale engine design and manufacture but also additional problems introduced by the small sizes involved.
