Tangmere Museum Visit updated 10Jul03

On 14th May about 65 Members (picture 30kb) converged on the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum to meet Neville Duke in the 50th anniversary year of his World Air Speed Record and to see the aeroplane in which he did it; the red Hunter Mk 3 converted from the prototype WB188.

The Curator (picture 6kb) introduced the visitors to the Museum and Mike Stroud pointed out the many Hawker connections. A happy couple of hours were spent appreciating the exhibits and chatting to friends and colleagues. Notable amongst those present were Vivian Stanbury, head of the Project Office in the early days of the jets, test pilots John Farley and David Lockspeiser, Wally Rayner and the still irrepressible Jan White!

Neville Duke was surely suffering from arm fatigue after generously signing many Members' books and photographs. Altogether a most enjoyable afternoon on a lovely sunny day. Chris Farara
