Christmas Lunch 9th December 2009 - Ken Batstone

On Wednesday, December 9th, 44 Members and Guests gathered at the Richmond Road Hawker YMCA Centre (the old HSA Sports Club) for the 7th annual Xmas Lunch. This number was somewhat down on the 2008 number of 60 attendees. It is not clear whether this was due to the current national financial situation or that people were just not hungry!

Be that as it may, the attendees gathered at 12.30pm for drinks and socialising before sitting down for the meal at 1.15pm. As for the previous year, the Hall and tables had been most attractively decorated; this time with a silver and grey theme. The menu was the same as that for 2008 and surprisingly, the cost had been kept the same too.

The Staff at the Hawker YMCA provided and served an excellent meal, menu, which was enjoyable for its quality, quantity and temperature. To achieve all three of these requisites was commendable, so thanks to Angela, Michelle, Anthony and all the YMCA Staff.

Since our President was unable to attend the Lunch, our Chairman, Ambrose Barber, gave the after-lunch Address. Since he would normally give a short address after the President anyway, he had to make this one last twice as long. This he achieved by telling a long shaggy-dog story. (Those who wish to hear this story should contact the Chairman!)

To complete the afternoon, the traditional Xmas Raffle was held. The Hawker YMCA had very generously donated 4 bottles of wine and 2 boxes of chocolates and Ralph Hooper donated a fine 1/24th scale model kit of the P51 Mustang. Coupled with the usual Xmas Raffle prizes (largely alcoholic) there was a larger than normal number to be won. There was some consternation when all the prizes seemed to be going to one side of the Hall, but equanimity was restored when the other side of the Hall caught up, much to the relief of the Raffle Organiser!

To summarise, the 2009 Xmas Lunch was greatly enjoyable; the equal of 2008. This was due largely to the Staff of the Hawker YMCA and the Committee showed our appreciation by giving the Staff a well-received gratuity.

So now we look forward to Les Palmer's New Year Quiz on Wednesday, 13th January.

The next big Event is the Summer Barbeque on Wednesday, 9th June. Let us hope the frost and snow will be long gone by then.
