Last New-Build Hunter 50th Anniversary
Kieron Kirk reports…..
Hunter T.66B "800" for the Royal Jordanian Air Force (RJAF) first flew at Dunsfold on the 29th November 1961, fifty years ago. The pilots were David Lockspeiser and Leslie "Dick" Whittington. Flt Lt Entwistle (RAF) and Cap. Firas Ajlouni (c/o No.1 Squadron, RJAF) ferried the aircraft from Dunsfold to Mafraq, Jordan via Luqa, Malta, on the 10th January 1962. Following King Hussein's decision to donate all the Royal Jordanian Air Force Hunters to Oman in 1975, "800" came to an untimely end on the 30th September 1976 at Thumrait/Midway. On landing the aircraft ran off the end of the runway and caught fire. Sadly, the pilot and the Airwork ground engineer were unable to jettison the canopy and perished in the cockpit.
